Danche Washing Station

Danche Station serves around 800 farmers in Chelbesa, within Ethiopia’s Gedeb coffee-growing area. Their farms typically cover two to three hectares at an average elevation of about 2,200 meters. Managed by SNAP Specialty Coffee, the station brings these smallholder harvests together for sorting, fermentation, and drying. SNAP also supports producers through agronomy training, including nursery management and growing other crops alongside coffee.

Variety

Kurume is a locally named Ethiopian landrace grown alongside other regional coffee types. Wolisho, also called Welicho, is another landrace associated with Ethiopia’s highlands, distinguished by larger cherries and a broad canopy. Together, they represent part of the local coffee diversity found in Danche’s smallholder lots.

Processing

Whole cherries are fermented in tanks for three days, then spread on raised beds to dry in the sun for 16–21 days. They are turned regularly throughout drying to help the coffee dry evenly.
