Farm and Producer

Tariku Kare began working as a cherry sorter at age 15, later managing washing stations before developing his own operations. At Refisa in Nensebo, the station purchases ripe cherry from 593 contributing farmers in Refisa, Roricho, Bulga, and Riripa.

The surrounding smallholder farms average about two hectares and grow a mix of local coffee varieties at elevations reaching 2,200 meters. Tariku pays a premium for ripe red cherries, encouraging careful selection before the coffee reaches the station.

74158, 74165 identifies the Ethiopian planting selections used in this lot. Numbered selections are part of Ethiopia’s approach to maintaining and improving coffee planting material, alongside locally named landraces.

Processing

In washed processing, the fruit pulp and remaining mucilage are removed before the coffee is dried. This approach often emphasizes a defined structure and separation of flavors, while fermentation and drying choices still influence the result.
